Janowskie Forests Landscape Park

Go to map

The Janowskie Forests, which are the central and central part of the Solska Forest, are one of the largest forest complexes in Poland with outstanding natural and landscape features. In 1984, the Janasy Forest Landscape Park was established to protect and maintain these values. The park is an important element of the protected landscape zone covering the Solska and Sandomierz Forests as well as the San and Vistula valleys. "Lasy Janowskie" Landscape Park is an area of about 40 thousand hectares. The size of these inaccessible forests with preserved old trees determines their outstanding natural value. There is mainly pine with island fragments of fir forests. Among the various forest habitats, from dry to swampy forests, fragments of forest of a forest nature have survived. The forest landscape is varied by river valleys, dune embankments forming elevations, complexes of ponds, lakes, swamps and mid-forest peat bogs. There are over 130 rare plants in Poland in these areas, 30 of which are protected by species. The complex of aquatic and rush vegetation is of significant value. Janowskie forests abound in natural, little transformed habitats, which makes the fauna of these forests extremely rich. Among 130 bird species, rare species are numerous, including osprey, greater spotted eagle, lesser spotted eagle, white-tailed eagle, black stork, crane. Noteworthy is the occurrence of the capercaillie in the Janowskie Forests - a species extremely endangered with extinction, under zone protection. Wolves, elks, deer, wild boars and many others find excellent conditions in the forest refuges. Within the boundaries of the Landscape Park, six reserves have been created, where the most valuable and rare plant communities, stands, bird breeding sites and game refuges are protected in a special way. In the vicinity of one of the forest village of Szklarnia, the Biłgoraj pony refuge was created. Horses descended from tarpans, following the example of their ancestors, stay in the open ground all year round and are fed only during the winter. Several horses separated from the herd were intended for recreational and utility purposes. Their mild temperament, small height and friendly attitude towards people makes them used as part of hippotherapy. In the "Lasy Janowskie" Landscape Park are located mid-forest villages and settlements, where you can find examples of old wooden residential buildings, old chapels and characteristic roadside crosses. The history of this land with relatively low population is extremely rich and turbulent. The forests were a place of refuge and fighting for many insurgent and guerrilla units. Particularly noteworthy is the battle of Porytowy Hill, which took place on June 14, 1944. German troops clashed with Polish and Soviet partisans in the forest backwoods. The battle is considered the largest guerrilla battle as it took place in Poland. Memorials after the tragic years of wars that left their mark on the Janowska Land are monuments and war graves in the places of battles and skirmishes, as well as overgrowing places after non-existent forest settlements. The beautiful landscape and natural values of the Janów Forest make this area extremely attractive for hiking, cycling, nature and in winter for cross-country and trail skiing. This is served by numerous hiking and cycling routes, educational paths and small tourist infrastructure such as sheds, bus stops and forest car parks. The Puszcza Bukowa River is a valued canoe trail.
