The construction of the castle in 1508 was started by Mikołaj Firlej, later the starost of Kazimierz. His son, Ruthenian voivode Piotr Firlej, continued it. It was a late-Gothic-Renaissance defensive castle, fortified by bastions protruding in front of the line of walls. He was able to fire along fortifications. In the years 1565–1585, the castle was rebuilt in the late Renaissance-Mannerist style, managed by the Italian architect Santi Gucci. At the beginning of the 17th century, after the castle was taken over by the Tarłów family, the residential part was expanded and the western and eastern tower were added. In 1606, reconciliation of King Sigismund III Vasa with the Grand Crown Marshal Mikołaj Zebrzydowski, leader of the Zebrzydowski year book, took place in the castle. On February 7, 1656, the castle was looted and burned during the Swedish invasion under the command of Karol Gustaw. Then rebuilt and expanded in the Baroque style by the Lubomirski family, which he owned until the first half of the 18th century. The reconstruction was managed by the Dutch architect Tylman from Gameren. In 1783 Jerzy Marcin Lubomirski lost the card castle. Mikołaj Piaskowski became its new owner. However, neither he nor subsequent owners (including the Osławski family) were able to keep the castle. They sold all the equipment (even the marbles were removed from the walls), and the castle was abandoned and fell into ruin. In 1931, the castle was bought by Leon Kozłowski from Warsaw. He renovated only two rooms in the tower, but - more importantly - stopped the vandals. The castle with adjacent lands was too small a property to be nationalized as part of the adopted land reform. As a result, Kozłowski was the only owner of the castle in the Eastern Block. In 1975, the building was purchased by the Vistula Museum and since 1993 it has been gradually renovated.
