The fortress was built between 1580 and 1618. It was built by Jan Zmoyski in the style of an Italian fortification form including the castle and city. Due to the terrain, some of the bastions differ from each other. The whole fortress has a closed centripetal composition, including the bastion-curtain perimeter and external fortifications. The curtains of the seven bastions are pierced with five gates and gates. The perimeter of the fortress consists of many components. Once it included external scalping and a stone cordon, three gates opened to the main routes: Lwowski, Lubelski and Szczebrzeski. The entire fortress was surrounded by a moat. It has undergone five sieges in its history. The building was rebuilt and modernized several times, e.g. by Jean Mallet de Graville. The fortress was built of red brick and sandstone used for decoration. After the January Uprising, it lost its combat function, was considered outdated, partly destroyed, intended for prisons and warehouses.
