There is a mysterious, charming house in Lublin, which is finally being renovated. It is popularly called the Kata House. In fact, the Master of Little Good, or simply the Master, lived in that tower. It was once a city gallows. It used to be this way - the pillory in the main square and the gallows outside the city walls. The procession probably began with a convict consisting of a convict, executioner, guard, prosecutor and a crowd of onlookers. Execution by hanging probably took a long time, because her gloomy ritual also included this procession, which ended its procession under the gallows outside the city (in this case it is about 2 km) Well, such a kind of entertainment (as per times). Executions probably took place at various points in the city. Beheading sentences took place within the city walls. And punishments performed by hanging or beheading (with quartering, when they were supposed to be shameful) - took place outside the city limits. This was probably due to the fact that the beheading sentence was considered an honorary punishment, as opposed to being hanged or beheaded with quartering. The gallows in Lublin was located just at the city border. Lublin actually ended here. And now the same center! The first reference to the existence of the gallows dates back to 1408. Another from 1595 - numerous entries in the books of municipal revenues and expenses regarding the construction process regarding the construction of a stone gallows. The gallows tower was two-story and had the form of a prism. 8 It is believed that the tower was built near the older gallows in the place, which was designated for this type of equipment in the fourteenth century. On the gallows, the convicts hung until the skeleton was left, then they were only removed and the bones were most often thrown into the gallows. If there is a cellar under the Lublin gallows, there may be a lot of convicts there! Brrr !! Some (depending on the verdict and offense) were buried near the gallows. Others were allowed to be buried in the cemetery. And although the Church clearly stated that after the punishment, the criminal was cleansed and could be buried in a consecrated land, people were reluctant to do so - they were afraid of such dead people. Thus, places of necessity were created, such as the cemetery under the chapel in Saski Park, which was basically separated from the cemetery at the church of St. The cross was just a road, so in a sense it was like a part of a normal cemetery and also outside. In 1807, the gallows were changed to a powder magazine. It was related to the placing of the army at the same time in the nearby monastery. Dominican followers at the Holy Cross church. Later history of this hut is just falling into ruin. That is, somewhere around 1950 some renovation work was done. And then in the 80s and at the beginning of the 90s tenants from the quarters lived here. Now after the renovation there will be a cafe with a gallery. (I wonder what the decor will be like?) Or maybe you could arrange a museum in Katowice? By the way, a certain executioner also had a second interest. Executions sometimes took place, and people needed entertainment and enjoyment every day. Behind the Fish Gate in the Old Town hid a brothel run by him and maintained by city councilors. And his activities lasted a long time, despite the close proximity to the church and the Dominican monastery on Złota Street - two opposite ends of a small street. Lublin's Old Town is not very extensive. But how picturesque it is! But that's another story.
